Abstract

Annual waste produced by the coffee and coconut industry exceed over 10 million tons globally as of 2025. This waste can be valorised as organic fertilizer to combat the long-term degradation effects of synthetic NPK fertilizer, utilized in mass scale tomato production in Indonesia. This experiment tests the effects of coconut shell biochar (CSB) and raw spent coffee grounds (SCG) on the growth and yield of cherry tomatoes; soil organic carbon (SOC) and available-N content is also observed. Results showed that A1 (100g CSB) achieved the highest leaf count (leaf), stem diameter (mm), plant biomass (g), fruit weight (g), and SOC content (%) in soil compared to C+ (10g NPK), A2 (100g SCG) and A3 (50g CSB; 50g SCG). A2 produced the tallest plants. The findings of this experiment suggest that both CSB and SCG have potential as organic fertilizers. However, CSB enhanced most growth parameters of cherry tomatoes, compared to inorganic NPK and SCG treatments.
